Lighting Studies and 24!

The cool thing about having downtime is the opportunity to take your skillset to the next level. Young aspiring artists always ask me how often do I draw. The truth is quite a bit. I still make sufficient time to enjoy a well balanced lifestyle (i.e.: groceries, laundry, cooking, movies, talk-time with family, etc...). But I also make a concerted effort to keep growing. That might entail studying tutorials on colouring, concept art, doing research at my local library, other artists works, increasing my portfolio base, and in most cases, lighting studies.

So, as I find myself at another crossroad, where I've seen two 4-issue series put to bed, and a pleasant wrap up on the U.S. zombie film WARM BODIES, I can now focus my studies on the 'light' arena, and what better way to usher in than to watch an entire season of 24. Hands down one of the best LIT shows in recent tv history. Singles, doubles, and even triple light sources can be found throughout the series. I'm looking forward to getting my hands dirty on high contrast work and this is as good a place as any.

Process: Quickly drawing in faces on multiple angles on a clean sheet of paper. Pop in the dvd and freeze frame my chosen shot. Map light source onto my models, sometimes matching the model's angle to the one onscreen, sometimes flexing my brain power and translating the dvd model's light source on a completely different angle (ex: The model on tv is facing me, however I extrapolate the LS and place it on my model facing a 3/4 downward angle. Scary, but fun).

It's even more fun when you get a few artists together and enjoy the process. Much like life drawing.

 Let the FUN begin.

This process of yours sounds like a really great idea. 24 definately has mean lighting. The scary thing is that someone at your level can still get better! Seriously, what's the next level? Drawing by just focusing on the paper? Conjuring mental images in other's minds by waving your hand? All jokes aside, these past few posts are among my favorites. Really digging the last ICE post, especially the motel shot and the Batman!!!

Ha! Thanks, Manny. I try to use my powers strictly for good. Though every once in a while when no ones looking...;) Glad you're enjoying the stuff, buddy. Hope to see some of your latest artworks soon!
